UPDATE: November 10, 2011

Transcript of testimony of DFO officials David Balfour (Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Ecosystems and Fisheries Management), Patrice Simon (Director, Environment and Biodiversity Science) and Siddika Mithani (Assistant Deputy Minister, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector) before Senate Standing Committee available HERE.

The Senate Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans has recently begun a study that could result in the killing of 140,000 grey seals off Canada’s East Coast.

The Standing Committee has already heard from the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council, the committee which initially recommended a large-scale cull of grey seals as an experiment to see if it helped fish stocks in the Southern Gulf. The Committee has also heard from Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials. Members of the Canadian Sealers Association are scheduled to appear before the Committee on November 15th. To date, no independent scientists have been scheduled to appear before the Committee.
